Kit Review
Documentation: 4 pages including general description, theory of operation,
construction procedure, complete schematics, parts identification chart,
parts placement layout and troubleshooting hints.
Quality of Components: Top quality single sided epoxy board with sliver plated traces
and silk-screened part locations. The parts were all of good quality and organized
by type. All of the coils and chokes were pre made, no coil winding was necessary.
Quality of Design: Simple semi-stable double-ended VCO design two transistors and
a basic "switching" stereo encoder using four ic devices with the stereo pilot frequency
being crystal controlled.
Ease of Assembly: Read all the documents before you start! Parts placement was easy
with both the board being labeled and the documents provided clearly showing you what
goes where. This is a kit for suitable for beginners.
Setup and Use: The unit will function fine without test gear by using a stereo
receiver for testing. The power output was about 60 mw. The stereo separation was
good and the sound quality was great. No hiss, noise or other audible artifacts
were present in the signal. The frequency remained stable after a warm up hour or
so and did not drift more the 4khz after hours of operation.
Support from Vendor: No contact with vendor was made.
Cost: I purchased the unit from the Hobbytron.com website for $54.50 total
shipped. The unit arrived via priority mail in 4 days! (oct 2004)
